plan your trip ahead by using the AAA travel department. They have experience planning driving trips. This way you can figure out how long the trip will take you with stops along the way and nights in motels. You must sleep. Highway Patrol would tell you that more people die from accidents involving tired drivers than drunk drivers. Very dangerous. Figure out how many miles you want to cover in one drive day or night then pre book motels so you have confirmed rooms. Eating right, showering, sleeping and road stops every hour, 2 hours. Plan to have a road stop about the same time you would take a break at work or school. Most people who start work at 8 take a break at 10 then lunch at noon then a break at 3 then break at 5 to commute home/stretch/eat dinner, then break at 8 for a night snack the a final break to sleep the night. Break your day up the same way you normally would. You are just driving instead of working. Keep the car clean and wear clean clothes. you stay more comfortable and alert.

Make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before you leave. Leave as soon after getting up as possible. Eat a light breakfast; whole grain cereal, fruit, and whole-grain toast. Take a travel cup with your favorite drink; I keep coffee with me for long trips. Keep a window slightly opened while you're driving. It's noisy, but the fresh air will help you stay alert. Drive no more than 2-3 hours at a stretch, and take a brisk walk when you stop for gas or food. Avoid heavy meals while you're on the road, and try to eat as much fresh fruits and veggies as you can while traveling, they'll help maintain your energy. And finally don't try to get the whole trip done in one shot. You'll get overtired and that's when you make the kind of mistakes that cause accidents. Have a good trip, and good luck.

Books on CD. With music it's easy to fall asleep because you sing along, or you get used to the music. Whereas a book on CD, you don't know what's going to happen, so you pay attention. I also found that if you look for different license plates or see if you can count U-hauls, or find U-hauls from all 50 states. Stop every 100 miles or so and walk around to keep from getting stiff. Eat sunflower seeds and look for interesting named towns.

your favorite music and short breaks every once in a while to nap. Probably a few No-Doz pills from a gas station if you need the caffine rush (just make sure to read the label as to how many to take at once).
