Okay the check engine light was designed by the auto maker dudes to alert drivers that there is a slight problem occurring..usually a vehicle that is low on oil, water or transmission fluid. The check engine light will come on. Once a driver checks and fills these fluids, if the check engine light remains on, then it is time to move on to the bigger, more serious issues. Okay check the fuses, a small fuses can cause a number of different things to go wrong in a vehicle, a blown fuse can cause a check engine light to come on especially in older vehicles. A blown fuse can cause some of the electrical devices on a car not to work properly or not at all, okay no it is not a blown fuse, then it is time to start check your automobiles sensors. Oxgen Sensors help the car to burn fuel cleaner making it safer for the enviroment .(Ozone) If the oxgen sensor goes out it will cause the check engine light to come on, not to mention that your vehicle may experience running a little rough. Now if a fan belt or any other type of belt that runs the autos fan, Ac unit and or the alternator is torn or even has come off the vehicle, the check engine light will come on. Now without the belt on the vehicle, of course the vehicle will run or (not run) differently. It wouldn't hurt to go a head and check the battery at this time also. Okay now, if the driver is able to eliminate all the smaller, less expensive causes of a check engine light coming on. Then my friend it is time to start checking the starter, the alternator, the water pump and yes my friend even the fuel pump in the gas tank, all of these parts at the very on set of a mechanicle problem can cause the vehicles check engine light to come on.

Cars now have computers in them, with a myriad of sensors giving them info. It could be anything from a EGR valve, to an O2 sensor, to a spark problem, or to a temp sensor.
You'll have to get the codes read.
Good luck

If the light is on the computer has found something wrong with the normal opperaction of the car.
Take it to Auto-Zone and have the conmputer scaned. It is free and it will tell you what is wrong.
