Depends on how much you can afford and how big your hands are.

Fender Precision (American Made) is the Workhorse standard

Fender Jazz for smaller hands

Rickenbacher for people who like to play bass like it's a lead guitar (but the neck is fragile, so be careful)

An interesting low cost one is the Steinbergen Conn Bass. It's basically a wooden version of the Steingergen made by Conn but with the Steinbergen tail piece.

The Steinbergen Graphite stick bass is quite interesting, if you can get behind that one!

Gibson SG Bass is OK.

Hoffner Violin Bass is still a really nice instrument!

Yamaha Bass is a nice Fender copy

Ibanez Bass is a nice Gibson copy

Four string is the most common

Most important to remember is that Bass Strings are expensive, upwards to $40 a set!

All the advice already offered is good.

How big are you? Bass guitars can be heavy. The Aria IGB range are excellent instruments, and are considerably lighter than the Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker basses. SOME of the Yamaha basses are also quite light.

If you are a teenager and have not yet finished growing, a heavy bass could damage your spine and give you a stoop.
