The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), is a Socialist organization founded by former Communist, Roger Baldwin (1884-1981). The controversial far-left establishment has supported such notable groups as the Ku Klux Klan, NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association), and the Westboro Baptist Church, the cultist organization noted for its picketing of solders' funerals and its "God hates fags" mantra. For me, these cases would be a little more understandable, but for the blatant hypocrisy the ACLU has shown in their simultaneous fight AGAINST the right to display religious symbols like the Christmas tree and the Ten Commandments, citing them as "unconstitutional" and a violation of the "Separation of Church and State." What's your opinion of this group? Explain.

Some of you have made some good points in regard to the way the ACLU stands up for the "little guy." However, you are ignoring the contradiction that I noted - "SHELL ANSWER MAN" - that they seem to have no problem defending evil people's right to free speech, but when a CHRISTIAN wants to express themselves, suddenly it's "unconstitutional." I have yet to see an answer that address this hypocrisy.
And by the way, I did not say the ACLU was liberal; I said it was Socialist. As far as I'm concerned, their agenda is not to advance liberalism, but rather to advance radicalism.

There is no hypocrisy or inconsistency in protesting the display of religious symbols BY GOVERNMENT AGENCIES (like the Ten Commandments INSIDE COURTHOUSES, or Christmas displays ON THE LAWN OF CITY HALL). The ACLU does NOT try to prevent private citizens from exercising freedom of worship.
*People* have the right to free speech and religion ... not the government. And the government simply cannot display a preference for, or a celebration of, one religion over another ... or for *any* religion for that matter. Government must remain strictly agnostic. It's not a free speech issue ... it's a church-and-state issue.
The consistency is always about the Bill of Rights.

I really can not explain it but I completly agree with you about the hypocrisy. What I find most amazing about the ACLU and some who answered questions here is the "seperation of church and state" myth. The constitution does not say there is a seperation of church and state. It says that the government can not tell you what religions to practice. It also says the government can not interfear with you practicing it. The ACLU and other organizations fighting to have these practices are in fact actually interfearing with some peoples right to practice.
No where in any writings of any of our founding fathers did they ever intend to banish religious freedom from government property. It does not say that in the constitution either.

the ACLU tends to stand up for those whom nobody else will defend. Because of that they tend to get detractors from a majority of the population that varies from a bare majority maybe when they take up a case for, say, women's rights to a huge majority when they take a case from NAMBLA (hey, so they found out who NAMBLA's been backing in congress, only problem is now Foley's gone so they have to find a new representative). Face it, they tend to defend the little guy and that makes the mob mad.
And I'm not really getting your reference to christmas trees and ten commandment displays (simultaneously? they're both religious displays, there's no real hypocrisy involved here - or am I missing something?)

The A,C,L.U, started out as a good organization but it was infiltrated by the commies who now have control of it,contrary to what some of you think they have tried to destroy this country and it;s institutions Christianity mostly, or it seems, they stay up nights figuring out how to reinterpret the constitution and get laws passed to help kill any thing to do with a Christin belief, they even went as far as to get the boy scouts kicked off of military bases, the boy scouts stood for christian beliefs, you don't need to be a attorney to join the A,C,L,U, so we all should join and take it back from the commies

How can an organization, who's sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, be bad?
They fought for Rush as well.
They don't pick their fights based upon a liberal bias, they base their fights on the sanctity of the Bill of rights. No, I don't support half of the groups they defend. But their integrity is unmatched. Do you really think they like Rush?
They fight the fights no one else will. even when they have to hold their nose to do so.

I don't agree with most of the things they do but they are doing the right thing. They are protecting the constitution. To do that you can't pick and choose your fights. I just wonder how many cases they turn down that you never hear of?
