Let's say that he works in a office setting and that he also entertains and goes out on the town on occasion. I figure at least one tux, but how many suits?

Room to hang up the suits and expenses to purchase and maintain them are not too much of a problem for me, so I suppose it is a question of how many.

Also, if you care to answer this...who do you think makes the best looking men's suits? Are Italian suits worth the money, should a guy avoid those "made in China" suits?

Thanks for the answers.

Well I'm a grown guy of 59.
I gave away my last suit three years ago.
When's all said and done, thay are not very comfortable to wear. I don't dress for other people - I dress for myself. Why conform when the others are unable to think for themselves. Life without suits is much simpler, Everything I own I can get in a back pack, and that's the way I prefer it.

I wpuld say, if he worked in anoffice setting, to change his job. He is slaving in an unhealthy environemt to make profit for someone else. You can go out on the town in Jeans and t-shirt if you are particular enough about the company.
I think god made the best looking men's suits. They are called birthday suits, and we all have just one, which doesn't require any storage.

Mind you, having said all of that, before I developed my own mind, I had three dress suits and five office suits! and enough ties to build a rope bridge!

Yes Italian suits are the best looking and quality made suits they are nicely tailored and always look good.
If you are in an office and entertaining and you can afford it you should have 5 good suits. Don't forget the belt and shoes you will need to purchase a couple of these so you don't get caught wearing brown shoes with a black suit. The shoes are just as important as the suit. And get at least 10-12 ties, and different shirts this will mix your wardrobe up some so you can look different all the time. I would avoid the Made in China suits you can get some nice quality American or Canadian made that will do you better than someplace like China..
Good Luck and I bet you will look like a million dollars, don't forget the haircut!!!

Start off with at least 5 suits. You will have to rotate some out of your wardrobe as styles change. I would advise you to buy at least two new suits a years from then on being that it sounds like you will wear them often. Honestly you could probably use a whole closet full. As for the made in China, etc. it depends on what business you are in. The higher the stakes the nicer the suit is a must. Personally I don't know much about suit fashion, but a Bunch of guys in Italian ones will know the difference, and if that's who you are dealing with on a daily base than you should probably step it up a notch too. Good luck to you!

To start of I would suggest four suits to cover the basic colors. One a black and a very dark grey, one dark blue and the fourth a pinstripe. Once you have that I would build the Shirts, at least a dozen, and tie collection and add a sportcoat in a tweed that has many colors.
with just 3 or 4 suits and a sport coat you have a versatile wardrobe for starting out.

As to which ones to get Brand wise. I would consider it to be a Quality investment so I would not pinch pennies nor be overly extravagant. Suit with a second pair of pants are a good deal as the pants get twice the wear as the jacket does. You will probably want to get at least one(or more) new suit every 12 months to freshen up the rotation. Usually if well cared for each suit will last several years so you chould have a large collection in just a few years.

One reason to get just a few is that you need a few months to get a feel for what colors work best for you., that you feel most comfortable in... the browns and earthy greens or the more traditional Blues and creams and yellows(or other light color or stripe) or white shirts
Do you want to try a few bow ties as a signature twist or an ascot. ? Hey I knew a man who had a different mustache every week or so.
Do you feel more comfortable and professional in stripes or solids. Having a spring/summer set and a fall/ winter set is another way to think of your wardrobe. Also you need the casual fridays Knit pullovers and golf type loafer clothing.

You already have one suit...your birthday suit! That should be your best!
Seriously, If you have the money and are in such a job which requires a suit, you there is no exact number. How many shoes should a woman have? If she is rich and goes out alot she should have as many as she sees fit.
Designer suits (not fob suits) are custom designed and fit the physically fit man very well. They make you look professional, rich, handsome, and like an all around he's got his **** together type of guy.
Picture this, you date this woman who wears the same dress three days a week with the same shoes. What would you think?
If you got the cash and you are tryin to make an impression on the right people who can make your career happen, do it! If it is to pick up chicks only, don't waste your money, they will soon realize you dont have your **** togther when you pick them up in your Toyota or Honda.
Check out the BLACK BOOK at the magazine section at Borders or Barnes and Noble. Some men's grooming magazine put it out.

1 tux is always a good bet. But I think the real question is how often do you wear a suite?

If you wear suites exclusively, then, I would have to say five or six.
with a number of different shirts and ties.

If you wear suites occasionally then I would think three maybe four. I have to wear suites everyday, so I have a closet full. Some I wear regularly, others I've had for some time and rarely wear.

Hand crafted Italian suites are very nice and worth every penny but I prefer custom made suites made by my local tailor, they are of the same quality and price of the high end suites found in department stores and specialty shops but they are tailored just for you, and you have final say on the design, and the fit.

I hope I was of some help.

Funny you should mention it, but if you could find a Chinese tailor you could get some really great suits, and custom, comfortable shirts. Tailor-made, and expertly fitted is so much nicer than an Italian suit that you see everyone wearing. I would have three made. A dark charcoal with a tiny white stripe, a navy with a medium stripe, and a personal recommendation from the tailor depending on the fabric he can get his hands on that would look excellent on you. Don't forget about those shirts! Pastel ties are really famous right now, and the next tie trend is supposed to be plaids, just to warn you. You could have the tux made as well, just take a picture of one you like from a celebrity or a magazine to help the tailor. Best of luck to you! You will look to die for!

I was going to say 3. One for weddings. One for funerals and one for dinner parties. But since you're in a financial position to own more. Maybe get a couple fancy Italian suits and about 4 suits that can double for dinner parties and weddings. Get some casual suits for work. But if you like good things like many people do. The Italian suits may spoil you. I know of one millionaire in particular who didn't mind buying Chinese suits. Once you feel how good the Italian suit is. You may never go back. My father has a closet full of suit coats. Mix and match with slacks. Maybe just buy them two at a time til you feel like you have what you need.

It's always good to have a black suit, after that navy, tan, grey, and then pinstripe. Becareful because you can only wear certain shirts with certain suits. This goes for a business executive environment. If you're just trying to be GQ then do what Maxim tells you, but prepare to replenish your suits on a yearly basis because they aren't in style. Good business suits are a constant. Itailian suits are good, but go to Joe Banks, or a Men's store and you should get a goos suit.

More important is that it's tailored to fit you correctly. A great suit that doesn't fit right still looks like crap. I learned how to dress by reading Dress like an executive from the Carnegie books. It has a ton of info.
