For a major city the crime rate is low, I think we just had the 16th murder for the year and the year is almost over, pettycrime, vandalism etc are also low. the education system, public district school board, catholic school board and private schools are very good. Activities are abundant for young and old (Papanack zoo), parks(Algonguin park in Gatineau is close by), lots of bike trails, dog runs, the Rideau Canal (right in he center of the city the world's longest outdoor skating rink) , Montreal is 2hr drive away for the kid at heart, good restaurants, not too expensive housing, good transport (but no subway or city rail transit that runs a good distance yet ) quiet, reserved for a major city, but still lots to do
Winter it's cold and we may get lots of snow as we are kinda in a valley so it's like putting cornflakes in a bowl but it's cleaned well by the city so no real problems and you can go skating on the Canal , and the Winterlude(winter festival) breaks up the boredom of winter, spring is beautiful with all the trees and parkland and the Tulip festival, lots of festivals in Ottawa all year long there's always a festival

Ottawa has a very low crime rate compared to other major cities, like Vancouver or Toronto.
It is a rather "quite" capital city, maybe due to the fact that it is populated by a majority of civil servants.
Ottawa, therefore should be ok to raise kids.

there's good and bad about Ottawa. there are a lot of galleries and beautiful parks and buildings. i don't think the crime is bad, but frankly i find it a little on the boring side (sorry to all those who live in Ottawa - i just visit). i think it would be a good place to raise kids. they'd probably be bilingual...
