If a jacket doesn't fit almost perfect, the jacket will never fit right even after tailoring. How does it fit in the shoulders and back? Does it button comfortably? Sleeve length and coat length can be adjusted, although coat length only a little. I hate to say it but save your money a little longer and get one that fits!

If you have to have it, get it. Take it to someone who does alterations and get fitted.
I've been sewing for eternity and never heard of velvet contracting. I do prefer velveteen tho.
All I know about velvet is that it crushes and why I prefer velveteen. The nap must brush "up" and not "down" in the cutting of the fabric pieces when being made.

Is there really that big of a difference between a 39 and a 40? If you really like it, then get it. I mean, even if it doesn't contract...just try it on and if you like how it looks on you, buy it.

Buy it then go on Answers and ask about a good tailor near you, secretaries and offices workers are a good source for information of that sort.

well, is there any way you could order the blazer online in a different size? if so, i'd take that approach. if not, then i'd buy it if you like it that much. you could always get it hemmed if it doesn't work out. good luck!

I always buy my good clothes too big. Then I can get them tailored perfect fit. I pay $20.00 for jackets $10.00 for pants. It is worth it to have a nice piece, perfectly suited to you.

Just buy it and have it altered or tailored to fit you correctly. It sounds as though the size is close enough.

People are not bothered what size of cloths you wear. Then why you? Moreover, loose fitting will be fashion of the day, seeing you. Why dont be inventor of the fashion.

i'm not too sure about the whole velvet contracting. but you can always take it to a tailor who can take it in for you. its not expensive to get it done either.
