Can't help here, I've never seen a battery gauge that has full or empty marks.

either your gauge could be reading incorrectly or your alternator could be overcharging...it's not as common as alternators not working but it does happen. alternators sometimes slowly go out....they work fine for a little bit then not work for a little bit until they quit working alltogether. That could be why it's not doing it all the time

Are you asking about a voltgauage or an amp gauge?

sounds like a bad voltage regulator. most alternators these days have an internal regulator. some regulators can be replaced some cant. if yours can be replaced get one, if not you need an altenator

FAULTY REGULATOR. replace soon or you will boil your battery dry.
