Goodwill employs many people who are retarded or have mental illnesses in workshops where they are closely supervised & trained. Some become able to work in competitive employment & are visited by a Goodwill employee periodically to see how they are coming along.

Because of their workshops many underprivileged people feel that they are contributing to society & it increases their self-worth.

This is how it works in America; I didn't know they were in other countries.

I have shopped at the goodwill and sometimes you can find a deal. I don't buy my kids clothes there but I do mine there. Sometimes I think there prices can get out of hand especially since the stuff is second hand.

You can never go there looking for a bargain, you have to go there and the bargain will find you. Like a perfect fitting leather jacket in top condition, or a cassette tape of old favorite tunes, or a book by a favorite author, or even pieces of art worth 100X than the price.

Other times, they over-price rags.

So you never know.

you can find good things there, and supposedly they help people (i don't know facts on that though). but often, at least where i live, they are really not cheap and the product is not always that great. sometimes i can find new for lower. but i hit them anyways since at times you find great bargains or rare finds you won't get other places.
