All I've been hearing is negative things about Memphis. Are there any nice neighborhoods to live in Memphis?

We recently moved to Memphis and I have been very pleasantly surprised - I love it here. Like many cities, there are "good" areas and "bad" areas, but it also pays to be aware of your surroundings. Having lived in several cities - some smaller, some larger, I would say the crime here is no different than anywhere else.

There are a lot of really wonderful neighborhoods, too - something for everyone. There are gorgeous, historic Arts & Crafts homes in Central Gardens, an artsy district called Cooper-Young, large, stately homes in East Memphis, and more typical suburban homes in Germantown & Collierville. There are also private, gated communities if that is appealing to you.

Memphis is actually a great place to live and the crime rate is pretty average for that size of town. Avoid the Whitehaven area and stick closer to Collierville or the Germantown areas of Memphis. Beale Street is OK but best to go there with a group of people instead of alone. Mudd Island is great. Lots to see and do in and around Memphis so don't let people scare you off of it - someone always has something bad to say about everything.

Memphis is not a state. It is a city in Tennessee. Elvismania is really big there. I guess that would be a positive thing for a lot of people.
