The coconut palm grows in rainforests and other tropical climates. The coconut palm tree grows in hot areas. It likes frost free areas, and grows in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Pacific region. The tree grows near seas in these areas so the roots can find moisture. In the United States it is found only in Hawaii, the Southern tip of Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. They can not handle any type of cold to freezing weather, the tree will rot.

As for being legal...they grow like, 50 feet high, so watch where you plant it.

Yes grow them by the beach but, if they're not growing chop down a tree close to the beach and plant the coconut where that tree was. The problem was you were growing it in a bad spot (bad soil or bad lighting). I should grow without being watered.

Coconuts are palms and as such are prohibited in Hollywood Hills simply because they are not consistent with the native plants. Banana trees as well are prohibited for the same reason and so are pine trees.

I had a friend try in Simi valley. It lasted for a while, but eventually died. They're tropical plants, so it is unlikely, but once in a while plants do survive in places they shouldn't and coconuts aren't that expensives.
