Dual core is a type of architecture and covers many different chips from both Intel and AMD.
The Core 2 Duo is the newest of Intel chips, and it's much, much better than their earlier dual core attempts. For example, AMD's AM2 X2 series and Intel's Pentium-D are both dual core, but the Pentium-D is is much slower. Meanwhile, the new Core 2 Duos are the fastest chips on the block.
So don't get suckered into the marketing hype and think that just because something is touted as "dual-core" that it's great.

there are many dual core processors around. the name 'dual core' s not a trademark or copyright, its just a way of explaining the processor.
Core 2 duo are intels latest line of dual-core processors, and are by far the best. Their previous dual core line was the penium D range which is far outstripped by the core 2's.
AMD also has dual core processors ( AMD Athlon 64 X2) but struggle to keep up with intels industry leading performance at the monent. Be interesting to see what they can pull out of the bag to give Intel some real competition!

Intel named their dual-core processors "core 2 duo". It is a dual core processor but "core 2 duo" is just the name they gave that model of CPU
