At most one hour.
They have a tour, you sit and watch a movie on history, and go down into the dam, it may sound intimidating because they say how far down you'll be going, but the space is very open and designed for tours. You'll go into a elevator, down into a room with a picture of a map, tour guide will talk, then the tour guide will take you to see some generators. The tour itself isnt that great, but at the end you are taken to the top of a part of the dam, and have a breathtaking view (which cant be accessed if you're not on the tour).
You're hotel and car rental place have maps and directions to popular destinations (ex: Hoover dam and Grand Canyon etc.)
Also make sure to bring:
Sunscreen: it's sunny in the desert!
Water: you'll get thirsty, and you may want to avoid paying 3 dollars for a bottle of water.
Your bathing suit!: there are some GREAT beaches you can stop by on Lake Mead, and after walking around in the sun for ten minutes you'll want to jump in.
Make sure to rub the statues feet for good luck
Enjoy!

on a good day with no traffic, it takes about 30 minutes, but since hoover dam is having this huge constructions, it takes more than 45 minutes. but one nice shortcut (not really shortcut, but better scenery and less traffic) is to cut through the Lake Mead National Park off i-215. go all the way to the end and it becomes the entrance of lake mead national park. you pay for like $5 and you get to see the other side of lake mead which you can't see from hoover dam and the route takes you straight to hoover dam. you can actually stops at some beaches which is pretty nice. enjoy! and have fun.

It is not far--but I don't have the exact mileage. Yes, they do have a tour of the dam but I have never been on it. I have been to the dam numerous times though.
If you have time, go North to Beatty, Nevada and visit Rhyolite (ghost town). If you start ealy enough, keep going through to Death Valley to see Scotty's Castle. That experience is awesome. And if you have an extra day take another road trip and drive to the Grand Canyon. I never waste a trip to Vegas....

For a Newbie, say 1 hour...There is an introductory program in the auditoium and I think after that you can buy one of those recorder things you listen too as you go up and down the elevators.....they have a little food eating place and plenty of parking....you will probably want to drive across the dam to Arizona and take photographs...don't fall over...you are so high up it is scary.....
