Because it can cut any other earthly known material. its hardness is 10 on Mohs scale of hardness (Max. known value)
and it is right as most of the guys said; it is hard because it makes a tetrahedral shape with other 4 carbon atoms making a repeated pattern of very strong covalent bonds.

something has to be the hardest substance, it just happens to be the diamond. And that is hardest naturally occuring substance.

Because it is so imensily dense. Graphite(carbon) is compressed with a huge amount of pressure and heat over a long period of time resulting in the dense diamond.

It got that way because of the way it was formed. The right combination of elements, under intense pressure over a very long time, and there ya go. Another way to oppress the African working man.

I think its because it has 4 valence electrons which allow each carbon atom to bond with four neighbors, making a really locked-in lattice structure.
