The Halo series is unquestionably the more popular series.

Forget all of the other stats you've read above mine, here's the one that counts:

The game "Halo 2" alone.. for Xbox alone, not for multiple consoles or systems sold 7 MILLION copies worldwide as of this time LAST YEAR.

http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?story=h2anniversary <-- look halfway down the page for info.

Final fantasy went nuts with releases on 3 platforms at a time and 12 episodes, for years and years and never even got halfway to that number with any of them.

When Halo 3 hits next year, it's going to at least match what Halo 2 did.. even if it does HALF as well, it still means it'll completely stomp a mudhole where Final Fantasy used to be.

Hands down.. Halo wins.. Look for the Halo 3 commercial in the superbowl commercials this year. When's the last time anyone paid that kind of attention to any video game?

(for the record, the Halo movie wasn't cancelled, it was postponed, due to Fox and Universal getting greedy.. it's still due for release in early 2008)

Of course, it helps that Halo is very cool, too.. but that's just my opinion.

Well... time for a history lesson.

Halo: Combat Evolved : was first released for the XBOX in 2001.
later was released in a PC version

Halo 2: was first released for the XBOX in 2004

Halo 3: is soon to be released for the XBOX 360
These three games form the basic halo trilogy

Also, several spinoffs have resulted from these
Halo Wars: A real time strategy game to be released soon
Novelization: There have been several spinoffs of halo

Contributions: the Halo trilogy had awesome graphics and a fairly good story line. Halso also had wonderful controls. Aside from that, they didn't give much to the genre aside from a new level of in game graphics.

********************************

Final Fantasy: was first released in 1987 for the SNES, and was later released on both the Playstation and the Gameboy Advance

Final Fantasy II: was first released in 1988 for the NES, and was later released on both the Playstation and the Gameboy Advance

Final Fantasy III: was first released 1990 on the NES and is soon to be released (at long last) in the US for the Nintendo DS

Final Fantasy IV: was first released in 1991 on the SNES and was later released on both the Playstation and the Gameboy Advance

Final Fantasy V: was first released in 1992 on the SNES and was later released on both the Playstation and the Gameboy Advance

Final Fantasy VI: was first released in 1994 on the SNES and was later released on both the Playstation and the Gameboy Advance

Final Fantasy VII: was first released in 1997 on the Playstation and was later released in a PC version

Final Fantasy VIII: was first released in 1999 on the Playstation and was later released in a PC version

Final Fantasy IX: was first released in 2000 on the Playstation

Final Fantasy X: was first released in 2001 on the Playstation 2

Final Fantasy XI: was first released in 2002 and is an MMORPG

Final Fantasy XII: was first released in 2006 on the Playstation 2

Final Fantasy XIII: the arrival date of this game is unknown but it will be for the Playstation 3

There have been several spinoffs/sequals/prequals to he final fantasy games
Ergheiz
Final Fantasy 7: Before Crisis, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children
Final Fantasy: The spirit within
Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Chocobo Racing
Chocobo's Dungeon
the Kingdom Hearts Series

Final Fantasy contributed quite a lot to the RPG world.
It not only gave players a great deal of customization for their characters, it also gave RPGs a depth of storyline which hadn't been seen before. The greatest contribution of the Final Fantasy series was the creation of the Active Time Battle system.
***************************************************************

Since these are different kinds of games, let us break it down into numbers.

Exhistance
Halo: 2001 - 2006 5 years
Final Fantasy: 1987 - 2006 19 years

Total Games in the basic Series
Halo: 3
Final Fantasy: 13

Mediums
Halo: Games, Book (there was a movie planned but was canceled)
Final Fantasy: Games, Movie

Genres of Game's Spinoffs and Origanals
Halo: First person shooter, Real time strategy
Final Fantasy: RPGs, Turn based strategy, Racing, Third Person Shooter, childrens, MMORPG, fighting.

Total Spinoffs
Halo: 2
Final Fantasy: too many to count

Because of raw facts, it is unquestionable that as of now that Square's Final Fantasy series has been far more successful than has Microsoft's Halo. This is not to say that Halo has not been successful. Nor is it to belittle halo which is a very good game. However, Final Fantasy has stood the test of time, something which Halo can not claim yet.

As such, Final Fantasy is the better series...

Halo is the most popular game ever, Halo and Halo 2 are the two best selling games yet. Even people who despise the Xbox, Xbox 360, violence, and/or video games in general have heard of Halo.
