For 4 player I'd go with the original halo. For 2 player I'd go halo 2.
Get both. Actually I'm not sure if you can find it now but when I got mine it was part of a Halo triple pack from Target. It included Halo, Halo2 and the Halo2 Multiplayer mappack for only $39.99. Not sure if you can still find it that way but hope you do.

With the Xbox 360, I'd use Halo 2, because if you go online you can get extra multiplayer maps and stuff. (Not to mention the new Halo 2 maps that are coming out in Spring of next year, for the 360 only).

Halo 2 has a lot more you can do, as far as experimenting with glitches and stuff that's a lot of fun for multiple players. http://www.highimpacthalo.org

The Halo 1 multiplayer is more balanced (assuming you ignore the pistols), but Halo 2 just has more you can do with it.

If nothing else, on Halo 2 you can go through XBOX LIVE and play online with a buncha other people, and still use headphones and stuff to talk to them. It's a much larger experience than using Xbox Connect with Halo 1 for online multiplayer, but here's the link for that if you wanna go that route instead.. after all xbconnect is free.

Just remember that Halo 1 can be used for online multiplayer with Xbconnect, but it wasn't designed for it.

In the end, it's personal preference, I guess. I have both titles and play both games, but I like Halo 2 multiplayer better.

I'd only have played the original for PC. Speaking of, I think I'll play it now. =)
