Mjlehde@sbcglobal.net got it right except for the fact they now believe Dr. Mudd was guilty and the Booth Conspiracy was in retaliation for the Dahlgren incident. I hate to admitted but it does appear we ordered a hit on Lincoln. God Bless You and the Southern People.

Yes, Dr Samuel Mudd was his name but the charges weren't that he simply set Booth's leg. There was convincing evidence that he was privy to the plot to murder President Lincoln at some level, although might not have taken an active part. Based upon this, not his having set Booth's broken leg, he was convicted and sent to federal prison. He was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson as the president left office as reward for the good works Mudd had preformed as the prison physician.

Over the years his descendants, including famous television newsman Rodger Mudd, waged a skillful campaign to have his name cleared by claiming, falsely, that his only involvement in the murder was that he set Booth's broken leg.

Dr Mudd wasn't the only Lincoln conspirator who underwent the criminal equivalent of a face lift. Mary Surrat was found guilty and sentenced to hang for her role in the murder. She was the first woman to be legally executed in the United States and even though the evidence against her was overwhelming, she was clearly guilty, many of the uninformed still claim today that her only crime was that Booth lived in her boarding house and plotted the assassination there.
