when tolkien wrote the books he was in, i believe, the world war II. so it is actually a metaphor of the countries that participated in the war were sauron and the orcs & orukays were hitler and the japs & italians AGAINST the "good" side, the fellowship, were the allied forces.

so, in a way, maybe racists BUT, its a WAR and everything IS FAIR in LOVE and WAR.

OK. it might not be the WWII then it must be the first world war because he was a soldier and actually wrote some of the chapters of one book in that war, and yes it was the depression era. anyways ww1 or ww2 participants were same- allied forces.

peace.

actually the book was wrote during the great depression and was about the greed of people and the power greed has over everyone and how the little man suffers in times of desperation. the story was of basic good and evil, the meek shall inherit the earth, so no i dont think their was any racist logic or themes. People back then needed a way to escape from their dreary lives and he gave them the outlet, Reading. The hobbit was wrote during the 1960's and my mother read it when she was in jr high and that is part of the lord of the rings cause it introduces bilbo baggins and gives you knowlege of the shire and all the land around it and i dont think that was very racist either.
