You will know when it is not giving out as much (a breast is never completely empty) when the baby stops nursing and then starts again and keeps popping off of it, It is then that you need to change sides.

Like a breast before it was full of milk. Seriously. After you have been nursing for a while you will know that when they are full they are heavy & harder. After emptied they are soft again, like a regular breast.
I am nursing my 2nd child. I can feel the let down with this one, where I couldn't w/ my first. (takes him 5-10 minutes to empty both sides now(8mo)... used to take 15..)
The baby will let you know when they are done either by pulling away or falling asleep.

All you have to do if you are concerned is count wet diapers. Newborns only produce 1-2 wets a day. (maybe poops too) & by the time they are 6 weeks they should make about 6 a day. (maybe poops too)

just a side note: breast babys normal poops can come as often as with every diaper to as few as once every 2 weeks. :) Constipation is not possible with gentle breastmilk. If formula is used once in a while then the baby may be backed up only if they show sign of discomfort.

The breast is really never truely empty since the milk is made up on demand...the milk factory is always going.

Early on when you're still experiencing engorgement, it'll be easy to tell when the child has had a lot of milk as you won't feel so full after a while.

You can not "empty" a breast as it is always being filled. However it can get to the point where the flow is too slow for your baby to be bothered.

Sometimes I find it makes my skin crawl (on my back and belly), when they are nursing and nursing during a growth spurt to increase the supply. However I also have claustrophobia and it could be that kicking in to.

They probably wont empty the breast, but when it is drained, you'll simply feel relived, the breast wont feel as heavy as it did before.

when your breasts are full they feel hard and they get kinda big and it hurts...but when they are drained you can feel the difference because your breasts feel soft at the touch and it doesn't hurt anymore.
