If there's room, wear some thin socks.
If there isn't, tights or pantyhose might be easier and feel less sloppy. With pants, it's not as important, but if you're wearing capris or a skirt, just be sure the socks don't stick out.

It depends.
If you're wearing boots under trousers or jeans, it doesn't matter what you wear.
If there's no gap between your boots & skirt, go for your ugly but oh so warm tights.
If there's a gap between your boots & skirt, then try the double layered approach; sexy sheer pantihose, with cheating socks that stop below the top of your boots.
A little hint..wear your pantihose over the top of your socks, that way your socks won't drag the crutch of your pantihose down to meet to top of your boots :-O It's a trick I learned in Siberia with my socks, long-johns & boots.

Knee highs are most comfortable but you can wear full length hose or cotton socks. If you are wearing boots with a skirt, you should wear full length hose or thigh highs but if you are wearing pants, you can wear any socks you like.

as people have said, it depends on what you wear and how cold it is.
with a skirt, i try to stick with hose. unless it is very cold. then i wear boot socks. and i make sure the sock does not show.

If they are fitted boots then I would not wear any socks but if they are not fitted to your leg try the sheer ankle length stockings. You can get them from target for cheap.

trouser socks work well - just match the color sock to the color of your boots
