why didn't he run for presidency in 1836? did he make the right decision?

Jackson did not run for presidency in 1836 for two reasons, the first was the two term precedent set by George Washington and the other was his VP Martin Van Buren, who Jackson wanted to be the next president.

There was a tradition, started by George Washington and followed until 1940, that a president served only two terms. Today, the Constutution limits a president to two terms or 10 years.
