I think the fact that we in the U.S.A. are guaranteed freedom of expression is a beautiful thing, and that a burning flag is probably the most extreme representation of that freedom under any government.

In this context, doesn't that make flag burning a rather stupid thing for someone who DOESN'T like the U.S.A. to do? If flag burning is banned, then won't it BECOME an anti-U.S.A. gesture?

I always thought anyone who burned a flag in anything other than celebration of American Freedom was undermining their own argument in the act!

I've never burned an American flag before, but I would do it in celebration since it is legal.
If it were banned, then I would do it in protest.

Also, isn't that the only respectful way to dispose of an old flag? You aren't supposed to throw them away...

Riddler: It keeps passing the House and dying in the Senate, some day those Senators are going to sign it just to keep it off their desks!

The people answering your question didn't take the time to read the whole thing, or your concept it to deep for them. I am a former United States Marine and proud of it. you are correct ..the only respectful way to dispose of a flag that is warn and tattered is to burn it. I, as you have never burned a flag, but I am proud to live in a country where it is legal. GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.

I think that burning a flag, or burning a cross, is disgusting. It conveys a message which to me is abhorent. But you are right - burning is a way to dispose of the flag, so a "flag burning law" clearly criminalizes an intent - a thought. The idea of criticizing or denigrating our great country.

But that's what the First Amendment protects - even idiots and hatemongers.

Unless there is also vandalism, intimidation, or arson (or some other crime) involved, I would hold my nose and allow both. Don't make martyrs out of morons.

I wish burning the flag was against the law. But in retrospect I usually feel bad for the flag burner, because they are most commonly hippies strung out on a cocktail of illegal drugs.

Most flag burners don't know why they are burning the flag, but rather do so in an act of defiance. If someone is so unhappy about the situation here, fix it...period...

Being a veteran I did not fight for that flag for others to burn it!! It is not a freedom but a opinion made by the US Supreme Court!!! And I have participated in the disposal of an American Flag. It is done orderly and proper. It is a very respectful ceremony. Not a shouting, dancing, protest!!!!!

Reason why I am against it is because that is usually a foreign countries way of displaying hatred for the United States, thats why I oppose it.When the illegal aliens burned our flag on our soil to protest rights they do not have since they are illegal, that pizzed me off.

From my point of view burning a flag is stupid unless the flag represents Syria, Iran, Hezbollah and several others that I can think of. I am sure that you get the point.

That would be beautiful thing to me to see a commie burning in an ugly flag from a third-world $hit hole country. Thanks for sharing that dream!

We should be preserving what our country stands for; freedom not flags.
