My car keeps over heating. It's worse now that the weathers colder. What could be the damage if I wait to have it fix?

And- would this affect my smog check? Thanks.

hey there 3 things can cause your car to over heat low on anti-freeze coolant i'd check that first its cheap to top up but if thats full you need a new thermostat or you need a new water pump or you need a new rad this is everything that could be overheating your car hope this is help full you may want to take it to a garage and have them check all this out ok...oh and don't wait for smoke to come out of the hood because it could be too late have this problem looked at as soon as possible all these things i said are cheaper then a new motor and a new car

Sounds like a blown headgasket, you fail to mention the car that would help because some cars are prone to blowing headgasket due to an iron block and aluminum head.
Just check if you smell coolant from your exhaust or if it smokes white all of a sudden, you should check your coolant reservoir when it's overheating to see if the coolant is boiling in my case i check the radiator when it's hot but i suggest you don't do it you have to be very careful.
It could be more things too, a thermostat that is stuck or a dead waterpump if you have a dead waterpump you will see water pouring from a small hole on the waterpump that's because it doesn't circulate the water and it pours out of the faulty pump.

i own a repair shop, and if you wait much longer you may not have to worry about it,it may ruin the engine in it, and yes it will effect the smog check on it a lot,if its running hot it will make the emissions read a lot higher on it,id have it checked out as soon as i could ,it can mess the engine up real bad in it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

My old car had an overheating problem only the car wasn't really overheating but the gauge said it was overheating. it kept going back and forth. but all my gauges was messed up. sometimes it said I need gas when I just filled it. so if your going by what the gauge sais then I would just ignore it. but if there is actual smoke coming out from under the hood then check your cooling system.

It could be very expensive. You could blow the head gasket or crack it. You should check your anti-freeze/coolant level and if its low that will probably be your problem. It could be as low as $80 bucks to fix your problem now or even lower. If you wait you will be looking at hundreds of dollars.
