get a pure-bred pot belly. some mix breed with farm (meat) pigs and they really dont have the temperment you want for a pet. ask to see papers on the pig. lots of people dont check to make sure that the parents arent siblings. you dont want a pig that has genetic problems. they are very smart and can be litter trained or even trained to ask to go out. friends of mine have a few pet pigs and their biggest mistake was feeding her table food. the pig now knows where all the people food is kept and they have had to put child proof locks on every lower cabinet. if you are anywhere near northeast pa. in the scranton times there is usually an ad 570area code. 676 - **** sorry but altho they publish in newspaper they dont want it posted on the net. they sell pigs and other farm animals and will explain in detail everything you need to know.

Pigs make great pets, expensive pets, but great none the less. They are very smart animals. As far as advice on a breed it depends on what your looking for. Some pigs do tend to be more aggressive than others. I personally like Hampshires, but thats just an opinion. Everyone is different. Pot Belly pigs are most popular for pets because they are smaller. Where a Hog can weigh in close to 1-2tons full grown. If your on a farm or in the country with land thats not a problem except for the feeding bill. Yet, most livestock are expensive as pets. Also, I would suggest a barrow. (a male pig that has be 'fixed') unless your looking for breeding. Barrows tend to be less agressive than Sows (adult female pig) and Boars (adult intact male pig).

Pot bellied make the best pets, they can even be litter box trained, but like most other pigs grow to be enormous and are a huge responsibility especially clean-up wise. If you have the outdoor space to house a pig and its mess, go to an auction and rescue one of those poor market hogs. Unless your into bacon :)

i raise pigs and that all depends on what you want a pig for. eating?then i would go with a blue butt ,Hampshire or york shire or a Duroc if it is for a pet probably a pot bellied pig and most likely you wont find one at a butchers sale because you don't butcher pot bellied pig's they are too fat.

Many areas have laws and regulations against keeping pigs on residential property. (ie zoning laws, neighborhood convents, etc.)
