A red-light district is a neighborhood where prostitution businesses flourish, so named for the practice of placing a red light in the window to indicate to customers the nature of the business.

Some say the origin of the red light comes from the red lanterns carried by railway workers, which were left outside brothels when the workers entered, so that they could be quickly located for any needed train movement. [1] One of the many terms used for a red-light district in Japanese is akasen (赤線), literally meaning "red-line", apparently of independent origins from the English term. In different cultures red-light districts are identified differently, the most common being "district of prostitutes" (i.e. in Hindi - Randi Guli or Street of Prostitutes; in Bengali - Khanki Para or Neighbourhood of Prostitutes

Red Light District refers to a section of a city from the 1800's where prostitutes would hang a red lantern on their front door at night to let the men know they were selling their services. Thus today when you have a part of a city or town known for its prostitution it is refered to as a "RED LIGHT DISTRICT".

Also, Indians and Arabs are Caucasians (who are also white because many look just like Europeans). People here think caucasian means white, it doesn't. The German anthropologist designated central asia, India especially the northern ones, Europe, and North Africa to be populated by Caucasian people. It's bone structure not skin color. Over time it became associated with white. Now 'white' means someone from Europe or European descent. Yet, many here seem to think Spaniards and Italians are not white because they are not lily white. That someone with a tannish skin or dark hair cannot be white. But as we know Europeans are very diverse, just look at Germans and Ukranians. They are different. I personally believe the caucasian race is the most diverse one. Now if white means anything anymore it doesn't really. Everything changes, everything is socially constructed. What is white now was not considered white 60 years ago. And it's going to change again. Some say race is socially constructed anyways so it doesn't matter. But I think white would always mean looking different than blacks or the "brown people". So that would be the guide for who is white or not in the future.

It means the "seedy" part of town. More specifically, the area where prostitutes "ply their trade". ; )

Back in the day, the ladies of ill repute advertised their places of business by means of a red light (or light covered with a red scarf/cloth) so that their potential clients could locate them easily.

Refers to the seedy, and unlawful areas of town, it is from the old west days of San Fransico, when in the prostitution neighborhood, the working girls would hang a red lantern by their window to advertise themselves.

Today it almost always means an area in which prostitute or porno stores are the major sources of income in the area.
