Santa Nicola was born in Greece and traveled to Bari Italy. Before he was known as a saint he had money and he had a family he knew who had not much. One of the daughters of the family wanted to get married but had no dowry. Nicola came one night and left gold coins in her stockings that were hanging to dry. Nicola died later and was buried in Bari where is tomb is still present. There and many churches, chapels and cathedrals in Bari and the surrounding area named for him. Santa Nicola was very real. As is in most cases this myth is based on fact.

almost all western European Countries have a variant of Santa, and each one has their own twist to what is now the common mythology. The chimney's and stockings, parts are based on St. Nick, who would drop coins down chimneys and the would somehow end up in the socks hung, or laid out by the fire to dry.
The Reindeer are from another country, the suit varies as well, as does the exact size of his frame.

The red and white and fat are American additions, from a cartoonest named Nast. The tree is a hold over of Pagen's use of a tree in their worship.

There is no one tru ehistroy of Santa, but rather an amalgamation of many myths into one man.

It would take me to long to write it all out for you so you will have to accept a shorter version. Santa Clause had many different name and it was really came from many different pagan sources. Santa as it is know today started out as a spirit and was related to the tree gods that brought forth food in its season. Then later on someone started putting gifts under trees in order to entice the tree gods to continue to have these trees bare food. Then Santa was used in later time to scare children etc. Then much later in the history of Santa the Catholic Church allowed this pagan celebration to come in under a different name and thus we have Christmas and the birth of Jesus etc. That is the really short version of how it all started..........

its is true that the origins of santa are mostly from st Nicholas. his modern image comes mostly from people living in northern Europe. a hallucinogenic mushroom (amanita muscaria) was found by these people. reindeers will often feed on these mushrooms and the drug would still be present in the reindeer's urine. after drinking the urine, the drugs would lead to all sorts of affects, one of them being the sensation of flying. it is said that this is where the flying reindeer idea came from. the mushroom also happened to be red and white, which, according to some people, is the inspiration for Santa's choice of clothes. Santa is also said to come down chimneys because, according to some legend, st Nicholas used to drop gifts and money down chimneys. most of this could be just coincidence though

Supposedly it has to do with St. Nicholas of Myra, Patron Saint of the poor. He used to dump bags of gold and toys in the chimneys of poor people. Through poor pronunciation it eventually became Santa Claus. The image we know of today was invented by coca cola in the 1930s.

In the netherlands, chrismas is in november. santa is dressed all in white and he has 7 black helpers (slaves) with him. He sails in from italy. if you are a good child he will put candy/money/whatever in your clogs (his helpers help him with this). if you are naughty, he will put you in a bag and take you back to italy with him on the boat.
