Finish your checks. Nothing gets a team going like a player that finishes his checks.
Be the captain of your team even if your not the captain. Voice your concerns, motivate your team, egg them on when your on the bench. Players respect that and so do coaches.
Be very tight and alert especially in your own zone. Knock down your goals against especially when your line is playing by being stronger defensively. Be more aware in your own zone...

I think watching games helps....
Tape some NHL games and concentrate on watching the guys that you consider as dominant players.
When they aren't scoring, what makes them so dominant?
Where are they going when they don't have the puck?...Why do you think they went there?

What do they do on the ice with respect to what the defenders and/or their linemates do...also what went bad for them and why do you think it went bad...

I suggest working on the mental part of the game...that is what makes the elite players elite at a younger age...they have the mental capacity to learn and understand the game!

Alot of guys could practice shooting enough to hit the water bottle 9/10 times from the blue line, but if they don't understand how to get open, or that you can't just skate through 3 or 4 guys, they will never be a dominating player.

Learn to be the best skater on the ice, hockey is all about skating! You can get books and videos at the library. Practice drills and learn positional hockey. Know where to be and when, anticipating where the puck will be, not where it is now. The only way to get better is practice, get as much ice time as possible or try rollerblading.
