I am on the fence here. First of all I hate both Ohio State and Michigan and dream of the day my Boilermakers can field a team to beat both of them. Anyway, with a national title that is not determined by a tournament then I don't think a team that does not win its conference should play for the national title. That said of the one loss team Michigan is the best and deserves a shot at the title. Michigan destroyed Notre Dame and played the best rated team in the history of the BCS system (1.000) to a 3 point high scoring game on the road. If USC beats Notre Dame them send them to play OSU otherwise there is no team that can make the argument that they are a better team than Michigan. Both Michigan and USC are much better teams than the SEC contenders and as I said Michigan destroyed Notre Dame.

I have seen some good and bad answers so far. Yes, I really do think that a rematch is a better match up than some of the other options. I really think that Michigan and OSU are that good. As for the answer, which is shared by some sportswriters, that you shouldn't get a chance at the NC if you can't even win your own division, I disagree.

I think that a rematch makes better sense than offering it to a lesser team.

As much as I hate to say it, but....no. If I had my way the top 4 teams would do a play-off, 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3. The winners meet on New Years. That would sovle all questions. If say Michigan loses close to OSU and Rutgers wins all their games. Michigan could be #3, Rutgers #4 and say USC #2. They'd play and no computers or people could ditate the out come or rankings. It would be solved on the field, neutral site. And that would prevent the long as* lay-off between bowl games.

It is a distinct possibility. Especially if Cal beats USC, USC beats Notre Dame, and Florida and/or Arkansas lose again in the SEC. Rutgers certainly won't be in the National Championship game.
If it were a 3-point game, whether high or low scoring, I could see a rematch in Arizona.

rutgers/wv is really the key to this question. if rutgers wins out, how can anyone say that they dont earn their ranking. no other game this season is going to compare to ohio state and michigan. none of the other top five teams have as challenging of a game as this matchup, so stands to reason that the loser probably only falls to #3. which if rutgers wins out should put them at #2. no rematch.

I would hate to see that. Although I am dying for this weekends game, I wouldnt want teams from the same conference facing off. USC is going to lose again, the comps wont put an undefeated ND at #2, and Florida is going to get upset by FSU and then beat Arkansas in the SEC title game.

What do we end up with? Ohio St's potent offense vs one of the nations best defenses...the Rutgers Scarlet Knights!!

Haha, a bit of Big East bias here, so dont take me completely seriously. I do think if Rutgers finishes undefeated that they deserve to be chatted about in National title talk.

Absolutely. One of them has to have a loss, it's a given every single year. You'll never see a better case for a rematch. These 2 teams are simply a cut above everyone else.

If this is a 3 point game or less, I say you have to play a rematch on a neutral field. If UM loses by a FG on the road to #1 in the country, can you really drop them below USC? I don't think so.

No they shouldnt. Pool players race to seven for a reason because one or two games could be luck while in 7 the better player will win out usually. Playing only twice what if the loser of this weekend game wins the title? There shouldnt be a rematch for the title for that reason, they could be one one for the season yet only one is the champion, makes no sense to me.
