Remember the discman, or even the walkman? Portable music? It's just the easiest way to carry a ton of CDs or cassettes with you, but without the bulk. Not to mention you can easily change what songs are on your IPOD.

because the marketing strategy of Apple Inc. was to make people think that they were the first people to come up with the MP3 player although the Rio 300 came out much earlier than the ipod

its something to do -- usually anything music oriented is geared toward younger people. i remember my first cd player -- yippee. the portables were super hot and they kept coming out every 6 mos with better skip protection. and they skipped anyway and pretty much sucked but everyone had to have one.
