In war people shoot back.

What a thought-provoking question.

I think the general idea is that in times of war you're fighting for an ideal or to protect your country and your way of life. That's not always the case, of course, but that's generally how wars are sold. Personally, I think I would be incapable of killing another person, even if I were drafted to fight in a war. But then, I've never been in that situation, so I can't say for sure.

But murder, to be sure, is a very different phenomenon, because it involves premeditation on the part of the killer. A murder usually involves the desire to wipe out an individual that the murderer hates, to stop one particular beating heart.

I agree with most everyone above. When we go to war we seek to force our country's will on another country because we have some sort of major disagreement that threatens one or the other of the two countries. We move an army into their country to show force. Even without firing a shot, they shoot at us because they are defending their county. We shoot back to defend ourselves...you then have war, but killing in "self defense"

Murder tends to be an intentional violent act against a person or persons (simply out of anger or because you want to hurt them) The "murderer" usually doesn't fear for his own life.

Is it really different? I don't know. That's everyone's personal opinion or feeling. The Bible says its different...see the link below

I would guess killing someone in war would still be technically "murdering them"...

the main difference would seem to be a "just cause"... basically if your country believes it is morally correct in attacking, then they feel the murders are justifiable...

now... what should be a justifiable murder and what shouldn't... that's more complicated...

War is a horrible thing. Societies killing each other. Sad part of the human history.

And unfortunately, sometimes necessary, to prevent one or more morally corrupt societies from perpetuating even more heinous atrocities than the war. See WWII. So the difference is with murder there is death without reason. In war there is death with a reason, the reason is one society is defending itself to prevent another society from destroying them or another. It is self defense or defense of others.

During war you are sent by the government to attack and defend, but murder is something you do without the governments permission. So the determining factor would be the governments consent. Kill or be killed.

you know that is a very good question i look at murder as taking the life of some one over petty stuff and pure evil no regard for human life at all ,and war yes you have alot of casualities from it innocent just like murder victims but in war you are protecting homeland from other people of countries out to do harm (basically a murderer to) but you have armed forces who are willing and take oath to protect from enemy . so it goes hand in hand but armed forces are protecting us! again very good question!

War is fighting against a unified enemy that has made it clear that they will destroy you, and your way of life. That is defense. War is fighting to defend the innocent. Murder is the taking of innocent life. intentionally. someone who has done no harm.

I believe the Commandment says simply, 'THOU SHALT NOT KILL". I don't recall there being a disclaimer that says, 'Thou shalt not kill unless you're the Commander-in-Chief of the greatest superpower in the world and want to invade another sovereign nation just so you can suck all the OIL out its land."
Killing is killing,
Whether you've killed one person, three thousand U.S. soldiers, or 655,000 Iraqi citizens.
