The best way to follow these steps (considering you are using Microsoft Outlook and not Outlook Express).

1. Click on File --> Import and Export
2. In the "Select an action to perform" window select "Export to a file" and then click next.
3. In the window "Create a file type" select "Personal Folder File (.pst)"
4. In the window "Select a folder to export from" Select your Mails main folder. Usually its the top most item. don't forget to select the "Include sub folders" option.
5. Select where you want to save the file by clicking Browse (I would prefer on the desktop because its easier to locate) and then click Finish. Leave rest of the options as default.

Browse where you have saved the file and that file is the backup. You can copy it to a CD and then later import it and all your mails will be there.

You cant save your emails in outlook if you are reformatting your hard drive. The best what you can do is to forward them to yourself(email addr) before you start formatting.
If its only a couple of emails that you want to save then, copy-paste the email content in word document.
