I recently had a baby at the end of August and my body has not been the same ever since then. I have had 3 UTI's and some kidney stones. I have been referred to a urologist who wants me to get a CT scan and have a cystoscopy. I know I just had a baby and should be able to deal with the pain, but I was numb from my stomach down when the baby came out! I just want to be mentally prepared if this procedure is going to hurt. I know it is necessary to get so I can finally figure out what is wrong with my body. Any advice would be great.

I actually just got a cystoscopy today. I get very frequent bladder infection, so the test was necessary. I had a VCUG two weeks ago where they insert a catheter into the urethra, that procedure prepared me more for the cystoscopy because I was more comfortable with things being inserted down in that area.
To be honest with you, the cystoscopy is a very uncomfortable procedure and there is a little stinging involved when they put the numbing stuff in your urethra. Then when the doctor inserts the scope, there is more stinging and a burning sensation. The more relaxed you are, the faster the procedure will go and the less it will hurt.I managed to stay somewhat relaxed and the scope was only in my urethra for maybe 2 minutes. I would recommend taking extra strength Tylenol right after the procedure because once the numbing fades away there is pain when you urinate. Urinating has been the most pain I have experienced today. I hope this helps you know what to expect! Good luck!!

I have been in the room participating in this procedure. What you need to do is relax. The CT is the easy part. The doctor may want a plain abdomen x-ray a few days before or the day of the cysto. All of the cysto studies I have been a part of the patient is under anesthesia. They don't feel a thing. Once the pt is asleep the doctor cleans the area. The scope is put in. They look in the bladder, then they go into the ureter to the kidney if they need to- to get to the stone. When they see the stone they pull it out if they can. A few weeks after the cysto They may want another abdominal x-ray for follow up. Talk to the doctor. They are supposed to inform you of all that is going on I suggest make a list of what you want to know, sit with the doctor and ask everything you need and want to ask. That is what they are there for. Don't feel bad or embarrassed about asking your questions. Don't feel like you are bothering the doctor either. You don't know if you don't ask. Also follow up with them. If they say they will call you and they don't after an appropriate amount of time call them back. If someone is supposed to call with results (this is for any medical reason not just the cysto) ,and they don't call you - you call them. No news does not always mean good news. It means the doctors office is very busy, and they were side tracked or forgot. Besides you should want to hear the good news a well. I feel very strongly about staying on top of your medical health

I just had one done today in the doctor's office. I have had a ongoing bacterial infection since 2010 that will not clear up. I have been & still on a antibiotic non-stop. Every time I stop the UTI flares up within a day. I was not aware that I was having the procedure done today until I got in the room so thankfully I didn't have time to really worry about it. The put some type of numbing gel inside which helped a lot. It was very uncomfortable but tolerable. The doctor was really gentle & kind - he turned the screen so I could see what was happening & he explained what he was doing & what he was seeing. The test turned out good - no signs of anything cancerous & considering the infection was not that inflamed. I'm to still stay on the antibiotic until I go back in 6 months unless I have a major flare up before. This test was easier on me because I had a Urodynamics Bladder test about 6-8 months ago that was bad--during it I was catherized at least 6-7 times, plus fluids being pumped in & out, etc. It lasted almost an hour so this was a breeze compared to that. The main thing is to try to RELAX as much as possible. It's hard but I lay there & took deep breaths in & out & talked to myself trying to relax before he came in. The numbing med is wearing off now & I'm having so discomfort & cramping but not major PAIN. I was also given a antibiotic pill before the procedure to prevent further infection.

the cystoscopy can be painful. Ask your doctor to give you something for the pain. Most likely he will put a local anethestic in your urethera and bladder.

yes, but I have had a stroke and my left side is numb so the dr says thats why it hurts he says most women say its not too bad. I have asked for a pill to relax me before the scope, hopefully that will help.
