Ever seen someone screw up their face and say "Something smells!" then they sniff deeper?
Shouldn't it be that if something smells, try to avoid inhaling more of it?

You want to find out where it is to eliminate it

Sniffing hard is designed to draw more of the odour into the nasal passage. This way, someone can try to determine origin and location - both by possible recollection of what smells that bad, and by whether the smell gets stronger or weaker as they move about.

I guarantee you'll be more grossed out when they sniff you and/or their own armpits...

It could be that humans like to be freaked out. For example although few want to be scared they enjoy horror movies for fun. Humans also sniff deeply when they pass gas. Even if it's released from yourself i don't know why foul odors are "refreshing". I don't have an answer for you unfortunately. Sorry.

Lol that is so true!!
I had a dead smell under my house & I went around like that until I found a dead mouse.
that would be one reason.
but I don't do that when Hubby is around!! I grab my nose LOL because I know what the smell is haha
so it must be only when we don't know what the stink is.

It's like someone saying something taste really bad and then asking you to taste it, I always say ewwww no? Just curiosity or low IQ causes it, I guess?
