Reduce the number of programs running in the background. Go to Start>Run and type in "msconfig" and hit enter (no quotes) Then click on the startup tab. You will see a listing of most of the program that are starting each time you boot up. Most are not necessary. You can disable gttask, msmsg, msoffice, programs that go with your printer, digital camera, ituneshelper, adobe reader, etc. These all take up memory and cpu cycles. If you are not sure of the program and what its for err on the side of leaving it running do not disable program related to your anitvirus, or firewall. You disable programs by unchecking them.

This answer only works if you have Windows XP

You can change the amount of Virtual Memory your computer uses. This is Hard drive space used as substitute memory to offset the ram. Right Click on My Computer and choose properties. Click on advanced, then properties. then advanced again. Under virtual memory, click change. It should tell you a recommended level. Increase the Paging file size to somewhere around double this level.

Notice what applications are starting when you boot your computer and get rid of the ones you don't need.

Or, an easier solution is to just buy more memory.
