How on earth did this happen/ how can I fix it??

And you didn't even tell us what kind of video card you have? You really expect us to know THAT much? :)
In Control Panel / Display / Advanced, there's probably a section about "display orientation". Sounds like you're got changed.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say you have an Intel graphics "card." To fix this all you need to do is right click on the desktop and there should be an option called Intel Extreme Graphics 2 or something like that. Click it and somewhere in the window that opens there will be a place you can change the orientation of your screen.

Very simple, press and hold both control key and alt keys in keyboard and use arrowkeys to rotate the view of screen.
