When the pavement or asphault of a road gets scraped off for the purpose of re-paving the surface, does the old, used pavement or asphault usually get recycled, or does it get discarded? If it does get recycled, how is it generally re-used? Thank you.

The process is called milling in the trade. We don't notice it but its usually milled a reused right there that same day. We only noticed it in our travels when it's a big highway project and they just taken it up and not put it back down yet. Asphalt has an aggregate mixed it with it to make it more durable, fine gravel is the most common aggregate.

It is actually cheaper to to recycle the asphault than to pave new product.

So the 'turtle' machine scrapes it off - it is sent to the plant and reheated - then comes back and goes down as a fresh road.

don't you wish we had thought of that?

Yes it does get recycled. It is the most recycled substance on earth due to cost. It is from oil fields.

Used asphalt is taken back to the asphalt plant were it is added to the new asphalt as filler for the next layer of road. I drove an asphalt truck.
