A very good rule to remember...if they pierce with a gun, it's *NOT* clean and safe. A gun cannot be sterilized, only wiped down with an alcohol pad. This doesn't reach any crevices or hard to reach spots. When the gun shoots the stud through the ear, there's a tiny amount of spatter. Neither you nor the piercer has any real way of knowing whether the person before had hepatitis, aids, whatever...and an alcohol pad wipe down isn't going to sterilize the equipment.
Go to a piercing shop where they have disposable needles, the equipment and jewelry are *ALL* autoclave sterilized. The people doing the job are there because they have a keen interest and passion for what they're doing...it's not a minimum wage Wal-Mart/mall job. They are extremely good at what they do, extremely knowledgeable in how to care for your new piercing. Most of all, they can (and are happy to) show you the autoclave where everything is sterilized as well as the documentation that proves that it works properl (spore test).
Anywhere else, you're putting your ears and your health in very questionable hands.

When I got both my lobe and cartilage pierced they explained what they were doing and what the stuff did. I got to watch them apply the sanitizer to my ear and clean off the piercing gun and I went to Icing's in the mall.

well it should be the store should have a safe product to use for cleaning ears just as they would at a doctor.
There is probably a way to find out but just ask your doctor if you know anything about the product!
You can always trust your doctor!
hope this helps!

In the larger Wal-Mart store,s they sell the whole kit,s to do it yourself,
I,ve just recently had my lobe,s repierced and also a cartledge pierced, each kit had it,s own piercing gun, and the clerk used alcohol in front of me to clean the gun and my ear,s.
They are 4 wks old and healing well, you have to do the follow up care to in sure this.

you can never know but ask how they sterilize their equipment and if they use disposable stuff-like they do at the Dr and dentist.
If they look funny or their facial expression is weird-run to the next store!
