Watching tv ads for various shows, I always hear or see the showtime listed as something similar to 7/6 central. But then I find out that the show runs nowhere close to 6:00, but from 7:00 to 8:00. What does the "7/6" mean?

It refers to time zones. A show will air at 7:00 eastern time (East Coast- NYC, Philly, etc.), and 6:00 Central time (Chicago, etc.). Central time's prime time runs from 7-10 where east coast prime time runs from 8-11.

The seven is for the eastern time zone, and 6 is for the central time zone.
The east side of the US will see the show at 7, and the central zone will see the show at six because of the time difference.
