"For everything you have missed, you have gained something else."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Yes, good quote. We can often analyse one of various meanings from such quotes. I do believe this though. Think about every time we have failed at something or made a mistake, we pick ourselves back up and have therefore learned right from wrong. You always hear the comment, you learn from your mistakes. This quote can also mean that we may have passed many opportunities but in doing so, we have obtained others which may have been much better for us.

A good quote. & it's true. Everytime you make a choice, you are "missing" something, giving something up, for something else. For instance: if someone has a child unexpectedly, they're missing out on all the things that they might have done without a child to tie them down (partying, travelling, going to school etc etc) yet they may love that child so much that he/she becomes the greatest part of their life.

There have been times in my life that I've reached a crossroads & had to decide to go down one path and give up another. For each thing that I gave up or missed there was something else (better) that I discovered.

I gave up a safe life for a scary one in a new community & it's been the best thing I ever did. Life isn't easy. Sometimes to grow you have to take a risk & give up your comfort zone to find something better...

It is true.

It basically means that the choices you make add forks in the road of your life. It doesn't always mean you have gained something good. A broad example: If you decided to study all the time in college and missed out on all the parties, you might have gained an education. If, instead, you went to all those parties, you might have gained a large group of friends, and missed the education...

yes.. I dont think gain was the best word to use though.... for example if I miss a party or something I have to be doing something else.. I can't miss everything at the same time.... so maybe it would of been better if he said... For everything you have missed, you have experienced something else... or something like that...

I was interested in a woman on and off for a while... I kept getting treated more like the brother friend, than the boyfriend material friend. I got tired of it, and move on, but kept in touch as a friend. I had lost all special feelings for her, thinking it was going to be like that forever... Well on a camping trip I went on with her and a few others, she was hinting that she liked me. However, I had someone I was already interested in, and had been talking with, for about 2 weeks, so I passed up the chance with my friend. I am not with that person any more, but I now have a wonderful woman in my life, and I wouldn't have met her if things had happened differently.
Another example is where I was going to go on a date, and it got cancelled. So I go to the mall to grab a bite to eat... I ran into five people I know, all of which from different areas of the city, (I too went out of my way to go to this mall).

For me, it fits in with your karma. You may want something, or want to do something, or want something to happen to/for you. But it isn't right for your karma. Instead of what you wanted, God substitutes something that teaches you what you need to know to take the next step down your karmic path.

You can't always get what you want... but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you NEED.

For instance... I was an awesome singer for over 20 years, until I had an auto accident that ruined my vocal cords. Bye-bye musical career. Bye-bye to being wasted all of the time. That was back in 1999. Now I'm the happy father of 2, a boy & a girl, and soon to be a grandfather. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

it's 100% true yet not in the way it is intended. For example if I lose out on a great job and end up as a janitor. I've lost the job of my dreams and now I have the experience of being a janitor. It can be both good and bad depending on the situation.

Ah! the great wisdom I have found doing my own errands.

For everything I've missed I've gained a shorter lifespan.

i do not wish to pass judgment. i do not bother about whether it's true or false. i wish to share my view about this quote.

i have loved a girl and i still do. she was the sweetest thing of all that i could have ever experienced in this life time. as if life was getting back at me for my doings, i did not get to experience the beauty of a relationship. she outright said she is not interested in me. i missed her and i still do. i have not gained anything...i lost my mind and heart over her. she still occupies a special place in my mind. if only i could grow old with her!

at the end of it all, i learned a lesson the hard way. that is, love should be unconditional. even if she does not respond to my interest, she will remain the sugar candy of my life. i am drugged by her.

You didn't date the person of your dreams, but dated another who you grew to love and marry. What ever you actually do instead of what you had intended or hoped to do, takes on a meaning of its own. You missed the turn you intended to take, but found something you didn't know existed on the path you took.
