Borrowing isn't illegal, just sharing.

This source is for music teachers and should be fairly to point on the law and your rights to copy music.

Borrowing means to enjoy for a short while and return to the person you borrowed from. Copying is not borrowing, if you borrow a CD and then return it after enjoying the music, you have not broken the law because the owner of the CD had certain rights. When you copy the CD (doesn't matter to what) and then return it, you have broken the law because the ARTIST that created the music you enjoyed was not paid for the pleasure you continue to enjoy. (The artist doesn't get paid much for this as the record companies take most of the money in this transfer of funds, but he does get paid.)

Sorry to burst the bubble but the reason your copying the material doesn't matter. Profit or pleasure, the law doesn't notice a difference. The only thing is if its for pleasure your odds of being caught are smaller, but the consequences can be just as severe.

Hope this helps.

""Piracy" generally refers to the illegal duplication and distribution of sound recordings. There are four specific categories of music piracy:
*Pirate recordings are the unauthorized duplication of only the sound of legitimate recordings, as opposed to all the packaging, i.e. the original art, label, title, sequencing, combination of titles etc. This includes mixed tapes and compilation CDs featuring one or more artists.
*Counterfeit recordings are unauthorized recordings of the prerecorded sound as well as the unauthorized duplication of original artwork, label, trademark and packaging.
*Bootleg recordings (or underground recordings) are the unauthorized recordings of live concerts, or musical broadcasts on radio or television.
*Online piracy is the unauthorized uploading of a copyrighted sound recording and making it available to the public, or downloading a sound recording from an Internet site, even if the recording isn't resold. Online piracy may now also include certain uses of "streaming" technologies from the Internet."

As long as you don't profit from it, it is not illegal
