Why do people want to put their name or stamp on something substandard or shoddy? I can remember back as far as high school when the drama teacher had a prop I did repainted because it was not well enough(and I knew it, but still)I was ticked. Not so much that someone else painted over my work. But that I was not able to do it well enough and gave them the opportunity to knock it. When people see something I do I want them to go "Oh WOW!" Pos, not "OMG! Who in the heck did that!?" Neg. I never wanted to have my name attached to something substandard so I always did everything I could to make sure what I did was top notch, But a lot of people do not seem to care. They will do the very minimum and not more. And don't care how well the end result is.

Well for years now children have been given an unwarranted high degree of self esteem, and told "I like you just the way you are!".

Bologna!

Craftsmanship is not dead but it is under-appreciated in general, and overpriced when you find it. The true craftsman (no matter what his product) always strives to be better, and always suspects that praise rec'd may have been overdone, because he sees the flaws magnified.

That seems to me to be why the self-promoters always put out inferior merchandise, be it a building, a ship, cosmetics, politics, religion, food products, whatever.

I know what you mean . I have worked as a Dept . Manager for a retail store and I used to say the only reason some of them showed up for work at all is because they hadn't figured out to stay home and collect a pay check yet .

People are more concerned now with the bottom line than pride in their workmanship. Profit margins over quality.
The current train of thought is...how many corners can I cut to save money? The stupid idiots will buy it anyway...
And...guess what...we do.
