Is there a wireless card I can purchase that will increase my wifi capabilities?

I live close to a free wifi spot but cannot get reception as there are a few structures in the "line of sight." Is there an air card that I can place inside my laptop to improve reception? Currently, I use Verizon Wireless card, but if I can save money with free internet that would be great!
