I, however, AM English born and raised. And I speak English, with an English accent. But, because I live in America, I use American English words to describe things that are differently named here (America)
Car bonnet - hood
Wellies - Rubber boots
Anorak - downy jacket
Jumper - sweater
balaclava - ski mask
the list goes on and on.

Your ancestors determine how you consider yourself. Some Americans consider themselves German if their ancestors were from there, and they have learned American English to manage their business.

It is a melting pot. English is the language spoken in America, and in other places, with variations according to the country you are in. English is the official language of Australia too, and they have words that differ from England's usage.

The only time I heard us being referred to as the English is by the Amish. Well, I hate to think what the Amish would call me.

I think they were asking about the language preference.
