Powder Kool Aid. Really. Pour some in a cup and add 1/4 cup water and soak penny over several hours.

I vote lemon juice because it has a lot of citric acid. Acid sound mean like it could get rid of dirt easy.

I'm assuming if you are trying to clean a penny.....you think it must be of some value..... " NEVER " clean a coin.....knew someone who cleaned a coin that was worth $ 5000 and it dropped in value by half. Take it to a reputable dealer...but beware if they want to take it off your hands too quickly....
