Germany has established monetary funds for Jewish culture and heritage. Why cant the US own up for the 300+ years of repression? This is an apology not a handout. How could anyone be against better opportunities for black people born into poverty? If anything it would strengthen the country with a better citizenry.

Even though slavery ended 150 years ago, the Civil Rights movement is a mere 40 years old. Think about that people. Younger than most of your parents.

I disagree because, well I started my life with nothing, grew up in the projects, and have now created a small fortune. I owe no one! I will walk on anyone who tries to take from me, what I have worked for!

Me and my brother were the only white kids in the projects... Talk about unfair!

Take your cry for reparations to someone else...
I simply don't buy it!

Never owned a slave..... don't owe any more than has been done.
IE : equal rights, voting rights, affirmative action, college scholarships, the scales have tipped into the direction of the black population. They have as many rights if not more than the rest of us. They have been given all their forefathers asked for. Anything else would be overkill and selfishness. It would be like me trying to sue someone for stealing from my great great great grandmother, and they are dead. It just would not happen. I am not a racist in any way (my heritage is american Indian on both sides), just being real. I think the forefathers would be ashamed because all they faught for has already been accomplished and they would not want their heirs to become what the "white man" repsresented to them.

I believe in opportunity for everyone, but what you are suggesting is a handout. A lot of Americans did not participate in the opression of the Blacks - do you want to punish them as well? Sure, Blacks have suffered in the past, but Blacks have more opportunities than this honkie does. All they have to do is go after it. Too many people that are repressed are too lazy to do anything about it - don't blame the history of this country for that. There are a lot of African Americans who have made great successes - why? Because they got off their duffs and did what it took to get there. I live in Texas, and 40 years ago, we weren't doing anything wrong against the African Americans or any other race for that matter. Jesus came and died for my sins, so I don't need to pay for anything else. Enough said.

Reparations would only entrench society into further racial discord. The better option, if we indeed want a color-blind society, would be to make government assistance, fin. aid, etc based only on economic need. Indeed, this would enable society to help those who need it most, not just those who need it and happen to be a minority. Certainly, if poverty is disproportionately represented within minorities as the premise of your question assumes, basing assistance on economic status, not race, is preferable because it helps those in need, including ethnic minorities, without implicating race. To deconstruct race and prejudice, we need to avoid passing laws and policies that emphasize racial differences.

Finally, you say "how could anyone be against better opportunities for black people born into poverty?" Why only Blacks? Why not poor Hispanics? Poor Chinese? Poor White? I think the consistent factor, and the more important one, is economic status, independent of any racial criterion.

No, there is no slave alive today to be paid back, I don't beleive there is any child of a slave alive today.

Ameirca is based on equal rights not special rights. And all people in the US, no matter of race has the same education oportunity, it is just some races don't take advantage of thier choices as often as others.

And they don't need btter opportunityeis, they already have them, and they are just not taking advantage of the chances they have now. More "handouts" is not the issue or problem.

I have no prejudice feelings, but am growing tired of the race cards being played by the minorities themselves. get real folks, you don't see the "white people movie awards" or a "white entertainment network". Drop the words "black", "*****", "hispanic" and "latino" from the media events and the rest of our racial issues will go away. It seems that the very groups complaining about equality are the actual groups that keep the racial fires burning.

250,000 Union soldiers & Abe Lincoln died to free the slaves don't you think that's enough reparation? How about we give reparation money to poor Africans who make poor African-Americans look like rich folk. We've got hundreds of thousands of dirt poor Mexicans running into the US to work hard & live a better life than they ever had and I don't see why poor black Americans can't do the same thing? Do you?

Germany lost WWII. Blacks sold other blacks into slavery. I think it was a bad idea. If my ancesters were brought somewhere against their will, I'd be dying to return to where I came from.

Here is the answer. I don't care what color you are. You get out of life what you put into it. What happened 300 years ago doesn't mean a da-n to me. Thet is all ancient history. It happened so get over it. Besides what about all the young boys from the north that died. Are you going to make their relatives pay. So who you gonna make pay?

That's a stupid idea. The US has enough hand-outs for everyone already. If you want to seek reparations seek them from the tribes in Africa that sold the slaves to the Americans.
