Because on a log scaling, it is pretty close to right in the middle of stellar surface temperatures and luminosities and masses (though in number count, it is more massive than about 90% of the stars out there).

The sun is a main sequence star in the middle of its life-span. Most stars are main sequence stars (they fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores). Since the sun is like most other stars and half way through it's life, it is nothing but "average."

You might wonder that it is the biggest star , but too bad it isn't . Why , because the sun is the only super near our galaxy to share the same pull of gravity , however the other big stars (and if you look up into it you will know that the sun is in half of the list of known stars)are obviously in a terra galactic space

The one unique thing about the sun is an orbiting planet 93,000,000 miles away that has the most precious gem in the galaxy - life!

Compared to other stars, it is average - average size, brightness, life span, etc...

People think that it's average because they see it everyday.
