Comets are sometimes called "dirty snowballs" because of their makeup. A large portion of a comet is ice, but not just water ice. It includes ices of ammonia, carbon dioxide, and methane, in addition to water. A comet is also partially rocky in the form of very fine dust that is mixed in with the ice.

comets are made of ice, and dust/dirt. They also contain the building blocks of life, which is yet to be proven, but in my opinion that is how we got here on earth, through "panspermia", which would also presumably mean that other life similar to us could exist where comets impacted planets similar to earth...

It should also be noted that the water contained within the majority of the comets in our solar system is the type we refer to as 'semiheavy water' HDO (deuterium swapped w/ hydrogen)
