I have a 55gal tank with 5 Angels and 2 Bala sharks. I have one breeding pair that has laid eggs many times on the filter tube. They guard the eggs very well from the other fish. The eggs only last 2-3 days because the parents start eating them. Why do this and is there anything I can do differently?

Other then eating infertile eggs, angles will also eat their eggs if they feel threaten. Especially with the bala sharks around, it'll be quite tedious for the angle parent as the sharks are quite fast.

What I would recommend is for you to move the pair out of the community tank and wrap the new tank which the pair is in with newspaper once you think they're about to spawn, to prevent then from seeing any movement outside the tank. That should kept them calm and hopefully keep the eggs till they hatch.

The other way is to take the bala sharks out of the tank when they are about to spawn. Wrap the tank with newspaper if there are alot of human traffic outside the tank.

As diburning said try the slate..BUT you have to have current moving over it, to simulate the parents fanning the eggs..a simple bubbler will do the job.; Usually the parents eat the eggs for 3 reasons, infertile eggs, inexperience and poor water quality.

angelfish are cichlids and cichlids have evolved breeding parental care.

The angelfish might be "new at this" and aren't sure what to do yet.

Just give them some time and they will get it right and they will have fry.

If you can't wait that long, you can give them a breeding slate to lay their eggs on then remove the slate to a fry tank.

they are probably confused. one way to ensure some fry would be to put a 5 gallon tank down in your water (fill with water) gently put the slate in the 5g (DO NOT REMOVE SLATE FROM WATER). after just keep the filter going an tada!! your a mom!!

eggs will usually hatch 2 to 3 days after being laid.
they eat them because they realise that they areinfertile and will not hatch.

if you see them turning white on day 2 then they hav't been fertilised
