Fear. They are afraid. Plus, probably a bit of reversed racism as well. It is something that is unique...and being unique scares the masses. That means that you aren't being controlled...and you aren't falling in to what is the norm for today's society.

Why? Because this is America. Americans hate anyone or look down upon any person who is different than "them" or different than the norm.
I shouldnt say ALL Americans are like this but a great portion of the population has a preconcieved notion of what society SHOULD look like and how people are supposed to present themselves.
I think persons who are considered to be members of such groups such as goths, skaters, and punks are simply being different and choose to be different in efforts of escaping the mainstream American "style" that ingulfs them in everyday life.
Hate is a strong word. I dont believe Americans really HATE goths, skaters, and punks. It has more to do with the fact that people take notice of the way goths, skaters, and punks physicallly present themselves, different than the "norm". So therefore they choose to joke and make fun of these "different" people.

They don't seem to understand us. They have all these preconceptions about us, a lot of which are wrong. I'm a goth and the number of times i've been accused of just doing it to just to "rebel" or have been called a devil worshipper, witch etc.

I am a goth because it is who i am. I don't do it to "rebel" against society or whatever, i do it becaue it is an expression of who i am, a girl with an eye for the darker things in life. and we don't all dress the same, sure most wear black ( not all goths do though) but there is a huge variety of clothing and styles of goth (cyber, vampire etc), saying we all dress the same is like saying that punks dress the same, emos dress the same when it just isn't true, we have a similar style, thats all. Just the same as people who aren't goths follow the latest styles, but you don't say that they are all the same.

And we do get along with other members of society, a lot of my friends aren't goths. It is unfortunate that people stick us under one big stereotype without getting to know who we are.

Why can't people just accept others for who they are? Do labels really matter anyway?

But still, it is nice to see that not everyone hates us!!! :) Some of the comments on here have really made me smile (yes, shock and horror, goths do smile!) so thanks for that!

Because they're not afraid to be themselves, a trait not often seen these days. somehow it's offensive to be yourself.

but i think people don't like Goths because they seem so sullen all the time, which is sometime all a bit put on, skaters because they get in the way, and spend most of their time skating and not doing something 'productive' with their lives, and punks because apparently they look weird.

Sorry if i'm generalizing here, that's just what i see the general opinion to be. But i myself don't dislike someone merely at a first glance. i get judged enough myself to know better than to make judgements on others.

The only skaters I dislike (not hate) are adult skaters. I just don't understand why a grown man or woman would choose to skateboard somewhere when they are perfectly eligible to sit their drivers test and get a car like other grown ups. (My brother used to have a skateboard when he was 8.) Also, I feel that a lot of goths and punks are fake. They're not trying to be themselves they are just trying to deliberatly be different. People say that being a goth or a punk is about non-conformism. Then why do they all hang out together all looking exactly the same? They are all conforming to each other in the same group, trying to fit in with each other. Plus they all look so bloody miserable all the time and totally unapproachable. People 'hate' them because they make no effort to get along with other members of society and alienate themselves. It's a lonely world out there if you don't make an effort to get on with other people. If all you're going to do is moan about how people "don't understand" your way of living, then why should the rest of society make an effort to get to know such a miserable bunch of people who wallow in self-pity. By the way, it is possible to like and enjoy a certain style of music without having to wear black all the time. I myself am a big Metallica fan and have been for a while, but I don't feel the need to dress like a complete munter all the time. In answer to your question, you make yourselves the targets of "hate" by insisting on acting and looking like miserable gits.

Well I don't hate them, but sometimes "alternative" types really pi** me off because they label me as a "trendy" as if I'm just some cookie-cutter fashion victim. I wear fairly mainstream clothes, the stuff you'd see in Cosmopolitan magazine, and I have long straightened hair, and they look down on me because they think they're so different and unique....

But they are NOT different or unique, because there are LOADS of them around, and all they're doing is following a different trend. They are no more individual than I am, they are trend-followers too but their trend just doesn't have as many magazines to go with it.

I love fashion- all different types- and I don't begrudge anyone the right to have their own style, but let's face it- very few of us are individual anymore, "alternative" is just another fashion trend, so I don't think any of us have the right to be snobby about it or think we are superior.

A conformist is someone who dresses and acts in ways that are comfortable to their culture. A non-conformist is a person that is purposfully different, which alienates them from the group. In the negative they often are antagonistic to the order of society, but in the positive they are often free enough from the culture to see the cultures mistakes. This gives them an ability to teach the culture truths that are unknown to the conformists. This teaching usually comes in the form of art or music.

It's what we're raise to do. My church and my parents ( now in their 70's) grew up in a different timeline and tried to teach me that different types of people are so bad, avoid them. I lived in a small town that didn't have much diversity and now that town has alot of diversity, which is good. As an example, growing up,I was taught that black people were bad, but I think it's because we never grew up around them as kids and only had TV to go by, that's all we knew. Now that I've grown up and moved on to a larger town with much diversity, I have no problem with the differences in people and their lifestyles, as long as they aren't doing anything illegal.
