Boys were typically apprenticed; girls were educated at home. In wealthier families, children went to school. The first college, the Sorbonne, was built at the end of the Middle Ages. The first school rule was no swords in class...after 4 people died by the sword in college.

Only wealthy families could afford to educate their children. The children were sent to monasteries and private learning institutions. All other commoners were subject to ignorance! That is why the Middle Ages are also known as the "Dark Ages".

Oxford was established in the 1600s, but only a select few could go there.
Most boys learned a trade as an apprentice. Most girls learned how to clean house and cook from their mothers. Most children did not go to school as we know it today.
My source list shows one researcher who believes that at least elementary education existed during the Middle Ages.
Take care,
Troy

Boys generally did what their father did or were apprenticed out to learn another trade. Seldom included things as reading or math....mostly manual labor. Girls only learned to do housework....except for the rich...they might learn sewing fancy artwork or to ride horseback....sidesaddle of course.

Same way they are now...initially by their parents and then by wise men/women (=teachers)...and probably in schools. They just didn't attend school for as many years since it wasn't necessary and their lifespans were shorter.
Perhaps you wanted to know how cavemen were educated?

Well, they mostly weren't. Unless you were royalty. Then you had maybe a private tutor, usually a monk or priest or something...
